Taking strategic risks, being adaptable and embracing change is often the difference between success and status quo.
Arguably the biggest qualitative difference between rich and poor, on the micro and macro level, is the ability to assume risk. The most successful individuals, businesses, and countries are able to take strategic risks and withstand the tide of change. Embracing change as a catalyst for growth makes you more resilient, more adaptable and more successful in the long term.
Change comes in many shapes and sizes…good and bad. There’s change that you initiate, and change that is thrust upon you. Regardless of the cause, how you respond is what determines the effects. Do you let change make you more adaptable, more resilient and stronger? Or do you let the weight of the unknown paralyze you with fear?
Learning to embrace change, rather than resist it, is the key to success.
Change is a beautifully effective catalyst for growth. It challenges our ability to adapt, pushes us to our limits and allows us to demonstrate our greatest strengths and weaknesses. Embracing change and allowing it to be a mechanism for immense growth is key for any purpose-filled individual.
“Things change, and to ignore or resist this change is to increase our vulnerability and forego emerging opportunities.” – Brian Walker and David Salt, Science Alert.
I’ve always been a person who welcomes and seeks out change. Trusting in my ability to take and manage risks, I don’t doubt my ability to adapt. I know I’ll always land on my feet, or better yet, on top. Many friends and colleagues marvel at this ability.
Taking risks, and embracing that change by being adaptable, builds resiliency.
Resilience is key to success.
The ability to assume risk, to embrace change, be adaptable and most importantly resilient…that equals success. This proves true on the individual, organizational, and societal level.
Not all of us are wired to be risk takers, but if you are going to be a changemaker, adaptability and resilience are key.
Learn to embrace change, navigate risk and come out on top.
Have an independent mindset. Be willing to blaze your own trail – to take the path less traveled.
Going against the current, and weathering the waves it creates, requires an independent mind. You have to be willing to forge forward, despite the naysayers and doubters along the way.
The surest indicator of a great idea, is the disruption it creates.
By developing an independent mindset you can unshackle yourself from the influence of public opinion.
“See the world as an exciting place full of opportunities. Realize the abundant possibilities and options around you. Treat setbacks as learning opportunities that will build your inner strength… Whenever you face change, you are given an opportunity to grow, stretch and learn new skills. Yes, getting out of your comfort zone feels awkward and uncomfortable. But, the good news is that discomfort leads to growth. Instead of getting discouraged over how much you don’t know, try focusing on what you are learning as a result of the change. –
Look at every moment as a learning opportunity.
As any purpose driven leader knows, embracing change also means confronting our greatest fears and weaknesses.
Regardless of the origin, the uncertainty of change often creates anxiety and fear. It is for this reason that many of us stay the course in unhappy routines or unhealthy habits.
We know what to expect and therefore, it makes it easier to stay right where we are. For those brave enough, embracing change drives exponential growth. It does not mean that you are not going to experience highs and lows or significant challenges, but it is in these moments that growth truly takes place.
With every change you have an opportunity to grow and learn new things.
According to Ani Alexander, of Tiny Buddha, “You discover new insights about different aspects of your life. You learn lessons even from changes that did not lead you to where you wanted to be.”
Embrace a positive mindset, and focus on the learning opportunities that come from each milestone and roadblock. By having the mental strength to push through resistance, and not equating each setback to failure, we can learn, grow and adapt.
Often we don’t fear a single change as much as the cascade effect it creates. Embarking on a new path brings new opportunities. With one change, comes another. Depending on your mindset this can bring a new world of possibilities, or a crippling fear of the unknown.
No matter what the change – self directed or imposed – embrace it as a powerful learning opportunity.
Change is a fact of life, and learning to use it as a catalyst for growth will ensure resilience and success.
Are you struggling to embrace change or riding it’s waves towards success?
No matter how strong the current, try and stay grounded in your purpose. It will keep you on course, despite the changing tides.
Until next time, Eat Pray Serve.
